Australia's second largest city with a current population well over 3 million people is Melbourne.  Attractively located on the the banks of the Yarra River and the shores of Port Phillip, Melbourne is well known for it's business, recreation, shopping, wonderful restaurants, and the their trams.

One of many trams Melbourne has. Click on the picture to follow up on the history of the tram service by MTram.

Melbourne's world famous trams have been helping people travel around the city for more than a century. The network has come a long way since the first horse-drawn trams were used in 1884 with 450 trams in use across Melbourne.

Trams run through downtown and all around the city.  The trams help with providing great service and always being on time.  Plus the trams are very efficient as well by running on electricity.  Click here to see a map of the service in Melbourne.

These pictures shown below are from my first visit to Melbourne, October 1, 2002.  My Dad and I took a train from Geelong to Melbourne, and from there took the trams all over Melbourne.  What a great time we had visiting the number one city in the world.  Click here to read the CNN article about Melbourne.

This is the train that goes from Geelong to Melbourne. For only $12 Australian you can travel round trip, plus it only takes an hour to get to Melbourne. Well worth it.  Spencer Street Station in Melbourne. A huge train station that helps many travelers make it to Melbourne and back.  This is one of the newer Yarra Trams. There are so many different looking trams in Melbourne. The nice thing though is once you have a day ticket, you can ride any tram in the city you choose.    Holiday Inn downtown Melbourne on the Yarra River. I will have to check this place out sometime.

The Multi Billion dollar Crowne Plaza Casino. A sure place to see lots of people. Here there is enough things to do and see that you could spend the whole day here.  The Melbourne city skyline. Melbourne is a powerful city with lots to see and smaller buildings then New York or Chicago.    Melbourne does however have the tallest building in the Southern Hemisphere. On the 55th. floor there is an observation deck. Not as tall as Chicago's Sears Tower.    The buildings here are beautiful and a lot of fun to look up at for awhile.

This is one of the many tram operators. She was very nice to us and told us many exciting things about the tram. One thing she mentioned was she does her route twice which takes four hours and then she has a break before doing it again.    A downtown picture with lots of taxi cabs lined up. Looks like Chicago a bit.  This is the card reader for the tram. People coming on the tram are suppose to validate their tram cards so it shows they paid for one.    This Flower garden features some 70,000 flowers which are re-planted with the change of season. There is a clock that was donated by the Swiss.

A beautiful picture of one of many parks in Melbourne.    A pretty nice fountain which turns on every hour and stays on for 45 minutes.

Hard Rock Cafe Melbourne. I had a very nice lunch here. Got the Cajun Chicken sandwich, man was it good. Also got a few souveniors from here too.

The Melbourne Subway. I happened to take the subway during the busiest time. There were people running just to catch the next train home. It was crazy.
